Im looking for information on Moses and Catren McCarter of old 96th district SC. Im told Moses McCarter's land is in what now is McCormick County in Sumter National forest. Close to where Old Hopewell presbyterian church and cemetery. (Info given to me) To get to this area, South Carolina State Highway 28 is the key. Highway 28 connects I-85 at Anderson, South Carolina with I-20 in Augusta, Georgia and runs two miles south of Abbeville, South Carolina. From Abbeville, you should travel approximately nine miles south before seeing a sign McCormick County, drive approximately 300 yards into McCormick County and you will spot a dirt road junction. If you take the dirt road to the left and stop within the first 50 yards, look directly south for the biggest oak tree in the National Forest (it is approximately six feet at the base and approximately 500 yards into the woods) and you will have found the James Thomas Glasgow Family Graveyard. Margaret Ann Morrow Glasgow (Jennett's daughter) is buried therein. The only marker inside a cable enclosure is the families of James Thomas Glasgow. The latter was placed there about 1947 by Dr. Hunter, son of Bill Hunter and Clemmie Glasgow Hunter. Now, if you take the dirt road to the left of Highway 28, you will go west for a bit and then turn south for about three quarters of a mile and then west for another 300 yards and you will come upon concrete underpinnings of what once was the Hopewell Presbyterian Church. Continue 200 yards past the church and you probably will come upon a small pile of rocks on the south side of the road (could be overgrown by now). This is the northern portion of the land that once belonged to Moses McCarter. If any of this sounds familiar or if you have any information on this location or the McCarter's Please contact me at SoCaScottishLass@hotmail.com Thank You Tiffany M.
