There are at least two branches of the Rascoe (Roscoe) family descendants in Marlboro County, SC and Richmond County,NC. One of these branches trace their linage back through GEORGE WASHINGTON RASCOE (aka Roscoe). The other group traces their linage back through John and Martha "Pent" Mender. John Mender shows up in the 1880 census of Marlboro County,Smithville township in the household of William K. Sweatt. He is listed as a farm laborer age 14. William K. Sweatt's second wife, Mary, may be John Mender's mother. John Mender was born about 1860 in Chesterfield County, SC. He married Martha Jones (aka Steen) about 1886. Martha was born about 1864. Her mother was Elizabeth Steen and her father was an unknown Jones. Martha apparently had two children prior to her marriage to John Mender. These children were: Clifton S. Steen and Venetta "Nettie" Jones English. The 1900 census of Marlboro County, Brightsville township list the household of John Mender with wife "Penta", a nick name of Martha's. When the 1910 census of of Marlboro County was taken, John and Martha were back in Smithville township but were then useing the surname Roscoe. John Mender claimed that he was an illegitimate son of John R. Roscoe who was a brother of George Washington Roscoe. This is the same John R. Roscoe who served in Company "G" of the SC 8th infantry CSA and is buried in the St. David Cemetery in Cheraw, SC. John R. Roscoe was married to Martha Stanton and was recorded in the 1870, 1880, and 1900 censuses in Chesterfield County, SC. John Mender claimed that he was raised by his grandmother "Bet" Mender. The descendants of George Washington Roscoe flat out deny that John Mender was a son of John R. Roscoe. I believe there is enough evidence to make the case that John Mender or John Roscoe was who he said he was. The descendants of G.W. Roscoe referred to John and Martha as "Uncle John" and "Aunt Pent" Mender. They all lived in the same area of both Marlboro and Richmond Counties and intermarried with some of the same families. John Mender Roscoe was also known as "Dig" Mender or "Dig" Roscoe. The descendants of George Washington Roscoe refers to John Mender Roscoe and his family as "THE MENDER BUNCH". George Washington Roscoe was twice married. His first wife was Harriet Caulder and his secon wife was Jane Adams. The children of George Washington Roscoe were: 1. Ida L. Roscoe English 2. William Julius Roscoe 3. Joseph S. Roscoe 4. Lillie M. Roscoe Caulder 5. Lucy Roscoe 6. Daniel Thomas Roscoe 7. Millard Seals Roscoe 8. Minnie Lee Roscoe Steen 9. Oscar Raymond Roscoe 10. Magnolia Roscoe Turner 11. Edmond Roscoe 12. George Washington Roscoe, Jr. The children of John and Martha Mender/Roscoe were: 1. Elizabeth "Bettie" Roscoe Grant 2. Pearlie Roscoe 3. Elisha Roscoe 4. Redman Roscoe 5. Walter Thomas Roscoe 6. Hellie Roscoe 7. Johnny Roscoe 8. Willie Roscoe John and Martha Mender/Roscoe are buried in the Steen Cemetery in Marlboro County in unmarked graves. Martha died in 1936 and John in 1937. Some of their children and Martha's mother are also buried there. Other children are buried in various cemeteries around Hamlet and Rockingham, NC. Most of George Washington Roscoe children died and were buried in Richmond County, NC also. George Washington Roscoe was born 27 July 1841 and died 23 April 1921. His death certificate states that he was buried in the Hubbard Cemetery in Marlboro County but his tombstone is in the Brigman Cemetery #4. I have lots more data on these Roscoes and other Roscoe relatives who were in Chesterfield County. Would be pleased to share and exchange date with descendants or other interested person. James R.
