Hi Judy.
Thornwell orphanage was known by 3 names...
I don't know if this is what you are looking for...found this at a web-site called Laurens county, SC during the Reconstruction Era.

Jacobs (March 15, 1842-September 10, 1917) knew six languages: English, Latin, Greek, French, German, and Hebrew, and was a student of metaphysics, history, astronomy, and shorthand. His mother was an orphan, and he attended Columbia Seminary, where James H. Thornwell had a great influence on him. He came to the disorganized Presbyterian Church in Clinton of only forty-seven members in 1864. They called his orphanage
"Jacob's Folly." Greenville News, July 9, 1961.

Also, The "Thornwell Orphanage" had another name...AKA.."Home of Peace".

Another orphanage in the area (Although it may have been in another county) was the "Vance-Maxwell Home".

Hope one of these will help your cousin remember.
