One of my family lines is SC Faile (via Betsy Faile). As an FYI, are you aware that there is a guy who wrote an entire book on the Failes (aka Fail, McPhail, etc)? There may be some info in it to help answer your question. I'm sorry to say I don't remember the author or exact book title but I don't think it would be that hard to locate and it is a unique and excellent detailed source on this distinguished Scottish/SC family line. I will look up your question in my copy of the book that I bought some 15-20 yrs if I can figure out where I put it.
