I am trying to find the ancestor of Benjamin Manning, b. abt. 1810 in Fairfield County, SC, mar. Ruth Beam dau. of Jesse Beam. They moved to Cherokee County, GA. One son was named Ambrose Manning, another son was named Reuben Halsey Manning. I have seen an Ambrose Manning in the 1790 census, the only Manning family in Fairfield County at the time.
I have read that 'Manning' was an Anglicized form of Irish Manion. I have also seen several genealogy pages that connect an Ambrose Manion with the Coleman-Beam-Halsell families, and that Halsell is sometimes changed to Halsey. This leads me to several questions:
1. Is it true that Manion sometimes became Manning, and Halsell sometimes became Halsey?
2. Is there any way to prove that the Ambrose Manning in the 1790 census is the same Ambrose Manion who was connected to the Halsells by marriage?
3. Is there any unposted record somewhere that shows that Ambrose Manning/Manion is the father of Benjamin?
