The John Sloan I referred to in my March, 2009 posting is the son of another John Sloan who appears on the Fairfield SC census from 1790 on. The elder John was a Revolutionary soldier, born in Ireland the early 1760's, but who immigrated in time to serve under Wade Hampton. After the War, he married Jane Phillips. His 1845 will mentions land on the Winnsboro Rd, but not exactly where on that road. Most of what we know about this family, which included at least 9 children, comes from family files posted on the WorldConnect Project; our research in Fairfield County is focussed on the Martins. We note there are two Sloan households in Kershaw County on the 1800 census--Patrick and Samuel. These are probably the ancestors to whom you referred. We do not know what connection there may be between Fairfield John and the Kershaw Sloans. To continue with your specific question about the John Sloan in our earlier posting--John Sloan the younger, was the eldest child, born Oct. 16, 1790. He married (ca. 1813) Elizabeth A. Martin, daughter of Edward and Mary Jane Aiken Martin. They had 11 children. We have not followed up on those children's spouses, except the eldest child, Edward Martin Sloan ( Aug 10, 1814--October 1888) married Caroline Roseborough, daughter of James F. and Jane Martin Roseborough. They had a son, John L. Sloan, b. 1842, who is mentioned in the 1847 will of his grandfather James F. Roseborough. Caroline Roseborough Sloan died before her father's will was written, and John L. has not been found as an adult. His father , Edward M. Sloan, went to Mississippi in the 1850's, remarried in 1859, and apparently died in Texas, where his widow was living in 1900. His father, John Sloan the younger, stayed in Fairfield County, where he died October 26, 1839. This is probably way more than you wanted to know, but perhaps it will be of interest to others perusing these postings. You can contact us by e-mail if further exploration is your wish.
