“Captain Bill, Book Three, A genealogy of the Catawba River Valley of South Carolina, Chester-York-Lancaster Counties, Edwards Culp McFadden [families]”, 1990, by Robert J. Stevens, available from http://www.rootsweb.com/~scchest2/scchesterinfo.html , has some information about a McKinney family and, in passing, a Carter family that intermarried with them. The 3rd generation of the Carters has a Robert N. Carter whose daughter Mary married a McKinney. I do not know if this is your Robert N. Carter.
