Origin of Covar family

Does anyone know the origin of the Covar name. My mothers maiden name was Covar and her fathers family was from Edgefield. They were cabinetmakers and supposedly had quite a good name associated with their work. Unfortunately, my grandmother allowed someone to "borrow" the furniture that was made by my ggggrandfather and his sons and it was never returned. We only have a fan stand made by my great grandfather. I know that there are many Covars still in Edgefield but I am unable to go further back than Sherry Covar, born 1797 and showing up in the Edgefield Cty. census of 1850 with occupation house carpenter. I am wondering if the name changed somewhere before my ancestor Sherry Covar. If anyone has any leads on the origin of this name and the original country from which they came, I would greatly appreciate an email and posting. Please email me at, Melanie
