John & Rachel Marchant/Merchant were my 4th great grandparents.

My research indicates that John Merchant (1755 - 1831) was born in Frederick County, Virginia (which is now Berkeley County, West Virginia). It appears that he moved from Virginia to Edgefield, South Carolina in 1771, coming south with his father Richard Marchant and mother Elizabeth (surname unknown). John later married Rachel (surname unknown) about 1793 in South Carolina. Rachel was born about 1758 in South Carolina. I believe John died about 1831 Edgefield County, South Carolina; Rachel apparently died about 1836 in Goliad, Texas.

John may have been a Quaker, as were his grandfather and father.

Although I am not certain it's him, a John Marchant/Merchant appears in the 1800 and 1810 Census records as such:

1800: "John Merchant" appears as a head of household in the 1800 Federal Census as living in Edgefield, South Carolina (page 179). His enumerated household included 2 free white males under age 10; 1 free white males between age 26-45; 3 white females under age 10; and 2 white females between age of 26-45. No slaves. Household included 8 members. (There were no other "Marchant" families, and only 2 other "Merchant" families listed on Edgefield, South Carolina at the time: Richard Merchant [probably his father] and Messor Merchant.)

1810: "John Merchant" appears in the 1810 Federal Census living in Edgefield, South Carolina. The enumeration indicates 2 persons over the age of 20, and 1 persons under the age of 20. No slaves.

I hope this is helpful to you. Bill
