McCarty South Carolina Edgefield DNA Project

Invitation to Join

The Project

An important genealogy DNA project has been launched and we need your help in making it successful. The McCarty South Carolina Edgefield DNA project was established for the purpose of researching McCarty family history ca.1700 in South Carolina. This project uses the test results of DNA samples provided by McCarty descendants and combines it with McCarty family genealogy research to establish family relationships. This project is historically important, because it focuses on South Carolina, with emphasis on the Edgefield District. This is the Website link: http://www.familytreedna.com/(qellyx2v0wr3okvjuibuhp55)/public/mccartysouthcarolinasurnames/index.aspx

Project Background

This project started out of a strong desire to preserve McCarty family history for future generations. We wanted to understand the lives, settlement and migration patterns of our ancestors. My wife and I have spent fifteen years and countless hours in South Carolina, researching ca. 1700 McCarty families. These years of in-the-field research have failed to identify common relationships among these early South Carolina McCarty families. 1790 census records contain many McCarty’s in the Edgefield area with no clear connections to each other. No documented evidence exists that can prove common relationships with each other or their descendants. Only stories and theories survive. DNA testing is believed to be a way to sort these families out. The McCarty South Carolina Edgefield DNA testing project was established to test known descendants of these early South Carolina McCarty’s. This project is designed to be a team effort where McCarty descendants are located and tested, and family history is shared and studied by all. It is believed, that as a group, we can begin to make the correct family connections by combining known family histories with DNA analysis. Our project is small in numbers at this point, but large in the desire to find answers together about our ancestors.

Surnames

The surnames to be tested in this project include McCarty, McCarthy, McCartney and McCarter or soundex equivalents. This DNA project currently has one McCarthy and one McCarty that are a perfect 24 point Marker match, even thought their last names are different. This is significant and is what a genealogy DNA study can uncover. These two persons knew nothing of each other and had no idea that they shared a common ancestor. Through testing, they now have a reason to share genealogy information and begin to piece together their family history. Other McCarty matches are just a test away as more participants join the project. DNA testing may be the most important component in McCarty family research

The DNA Test

The testing is easy and painless. In many cases, we will pay for a portion of the DNA testing. The persons to be tested in this project have to be male in gender. They, or their ancestor, should be a native of South Carolina and have a McCarty surname or a soundex equivalent as described above. A person that wishes to join the project and be tested should contact the McCarty SC Edgefield Project from the Website, or by email or mail. A DNA test kit is then ordered and mailed to the participant from Family Tree DNA®. The DNA test requires a simple Q-tip swabbing of the inside of the cheek. The swab is then mailed back to the testing company for analysis. It is all very simple. Family Tree DNA® is a leader in genealogy DNA testing and is located in Houston, Texas. We have no personal connection with them other than through the use of their service. We believe Family Tree DNA® is the best at what they do and are excited to have DNA testing as an option in our McCarty family research.
