I am seeking additional information about Rebecca Roscoe who lived and died in the Cole Hill twp. of Chesterfield County. She is buried in the Bethesda Methodist Church Cemetery. Her death certificate, #3954, states that she was born in 1843 in South Carolina and died February 8, 1923. It also states that she was a daughter of Jane Roscoe of S.C. and was single. The cause of death was listed as cancer of the left breast. The informant was T. P. Gulledge. From the censuses and other records it is known that Rebecca had at least four children who were: 1. Josephin Roscoe 2. Margaret "Maggie" Roscoe 3. William Joseph Roscoe 4. Virginia "Jennie" Jane Roscoe. There is no indication that Rebecca was ever legally married. Data from other Roscoe descendants states that she had a sister named Margaret for whome she named her 2nd oldest child, a brother named Joseph Franklin Roscoe for whom she named her son and other daughter and another sister named Effie who ran away with a man named Polson, given name unknown. Her daughter Virginia Jane was named after her mother. The children Josephine and Joseph may also have been named for Rebecca's father, (Joe Johnson ?) see below. It is this researchers opinion that in the 1850 census of Chesterfield county Rebecca, her siblings and her mother are listed on page 114 under the sur-name of Minder as follows: Jane Minder Head of Household age 28 Rebecca Minder age 7 Margaret Minder age 5 Joseph Minder age 3 Effa Minder age 1 Descendants of Joseph Franklin Roscoe who claims Rebecca as his sister have a family tradition that Joseph Franklin Roscoe was an illigitimate son of an unknown Roscoe female and an Indian or trader named Joe Johnson who lived in a cave ata place called Johnson Rock near Ruby, South Carolina. No documented proof or other records have been found that would confirm this family traditional story. Rebecca Roscoe's exact birth date is also questionable as the censuses indicates that she may have been born as early as 1825 or as late as 1845. The 1860 censu finds Rebecca living in the household of Minda Rascoe who I believe to be her grandmother. The census shows the following: Minda Rascoe head of household age 74 F. W. Marie Rascoe (prob. dau. of Minda) 30 F. W. Rebecca Rascoe 24 F. Mu. Josephin Rascoe 3 F. Mu. Margaret Rascoe 2 F. MU. The 1870 censuses of Cole Hill Twp., Chesterfield County S.C., page 279, dwelling and family # 4, shows the household of Rebecca as follows: Rebecca Rasco 45 F. W. KH b.S.C. Magga Rasco 14 F. W. b.S.C. Joseph Rasco 2 M. W. b.S.C. Note: apparently Josephine has died or married and is living elsewhere. The 1880 census of Cole Hill Twp, Chesterfield County S.C., Dwelling and family # 192, shows Rebecca's household as follows: Rebecca Ruscoe head F. 40 single b. S.C. Margaret Ruscoe dau.F. 25 single b. S.C. Joseph Ruscoe son M. 11 single b. S.C. Jane Ruscoe dau.F. 5 sing;e b. S.C. Ann E. Ruscoe G.D.F. 5 single b. S.C. Archie Ruscoe G.S.M. 1 single b. S.C. Note believe Ann E. and Archie are children of either Josephine or Margaret. The 1900 Census of Cole Hill Twp., Chesterfield County S.C., ED #19, sheet 10, Dwelling #197, family# 198, shows the household of Rebecca as follows: Rebecca Roscoe W. F. age n/r single b.S.C. Virginia Roscoe dau. W.F. b.10/74 age 25 Anne E. Roscoe GD W.F. b. 10/74 age 25 The 1910 census of Cole Hill Twp., Chesterfield County S.C., ED#34, sheet #6, shows the household of Rebecca as follows: Rebecca Roscoe F. 65 single mother of 4 childen of which 2 are still living. born in S.C., both parents born in S.C. Virginia Roscoe dau. F. 35 single Elizabeth Roscoe GD F. 29 single mother of 1 child still living. Maggie Roscoe GGD F. 8 Notes: Elizabeth is the same as Ann E. on previous censuses, her age given is questionable. Maggie is obviously Ann Elizabeth Roscoe daughter. The 1920 census of Cole Hill Twp., Chesterfield County S.C., ED #37, sheet 7-B, shows the household of Rebecca as follows: Rebecca Roscoe F.W. 77 single b. S.C. Jennie Roscoe Dau. F.W. 48 single b. S.C. Lizzie Roscoe GD F.W. 48 single b. S.C. Maggie Roscoe GGD F.W. 18 single b. S.C. Additional facts: Rebecca's son, William Joseph Rascoe was born October 1, 1868 in Cole Hill Twp., Chesterfield County S.C. and died June 3, 1930 in Coffee County Alabama. Buried in the New Home Church Cemetery near Elba, Alabama. He married Catherine Parker alais Catherine Purvis in Chesterfield on 24 April 1887. He was charged with and indited by the Chesterfield Court of General Sessions in May of 1887 for an illigal marriage between races. He was said to be a Mulato man and Catherine was a white woman. They had twelve children and moved to Coffee County Alabama about 1897. Ann Elizabeth Roscoe, daughter of Margaret Roscoe and great grandaughter of Rebecca Roscoe married Isaac Donahue in Chesterfield County September 4, 1920. She was born 27 October 1874 and died 16 January 1966. Her illigitimate daughter Maggie, GGD of Rebecca's was born 15 August 1901. She married Arlee Wallace. Virginia Jane Roscoe, daughter of Rebecca's was born 28 October 1874 and died 12 July 1956. She never married. I need proof of who the father of Rebecca Roscoe or Rascoe was. Also need proof of who the father or fathers of Rebecca's children was. Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks in advance. James R. Rasco
