Beth, thanks for the reply to my query concerning Caroline (steen) Roscoe, wife of Oliver Roscoe.

I see your questions and replies to other's queries on this forum as well as the Chesterfield mail list. You seem to be researching several of your own lines. Have you or Paul or any of Paul's relatives ever researched his Roscoe ancestors?

You have told me that his family had lived in Kannapolis, N.C. for a while. Several different Roscoe families from Chesterfield County S.C. seems to have moved there. Many were returned to Chesterfield County to be buried with their families.

It appears that Pauls great grandparents were Alexander Roscoe and Annie Jane Lisenby.
Marie Wiggins has in her book on the Lisenby family that Alexander was a son of William and Isabella Roscoe and that he was known as "Sandy". I believe that Mrs. Wiggins was in error in this. The 1880 Census of Chesterfield County, E.D.# 2, written page 2, Dwelling 16, family 17, has Sandy Rascoe listed in the household of William and Nancy Rascoe. The William Riley Roscoe whose's 2nd wife was Isabella was enumerated in the 1880 census in E.D.#4, dwelling 191, family 191.
This William Riley Roscoe had a son named William R. Roscoe but I don't think he is the one who married Nancy. My reason for believing this is that Alexander or Sandy had an older sister named Susanna listed in William and Nancy Rascoe household in 1880. In the 1870 census William Riley Rasco and his wife Isabella are listed on page 282, dwelling and family # 93. the son William R. Rasco, age 19 is still living in this household on page 286, dwelling and family 3 189 is the household of William and Mary Rasco with the daughter Susanna. The question now becomes who is this William Rasco or Roscoe who had a wife named Mary and a daughter named Susanna in 1870 and in 1880 a wife named Nancy and daughter Susanna, son Sandy, and another son whose name I can make out in the 1880 census.

You will notes that the sur-name is spelled various ways in the censuses i.e. Rascow,Rascoe,Rasco,Roscoe, Ruscoe for the same people.

Living where you currently live you and Paul have a very good opportunity to research Pauls ancestors in the County Records at least back as far as 1865 when the courthouse was burnt down and most records destroyed.

James R. Rasco
