Thanks for getting back to me Charles. It looks to me like the link you sent me refers to a different person than the man I was referring to, although I think they were cousins. It seems like the name Chesley was a very popular name with the Boatwrights. I'd be curious to find out who it originated from.
After looking at this site though, it does not look like my John C.D. Boatwright was in Chesterfield County.
I guess I'll just have to keep looking.
