Hopefully, someone can help piece together how the individuals mentioned in the following newspaper abstract (dated 1835) relate to one another and to the Batts families. ..... South Carolina, Chesterfield District William Horton vs. Washington Thompson & wife Nancy, Aaron Knight and wife Winifred, Samuel J. Horton, John Horton, James Knight and wife Elizabeth, Burwell Dixon, Sarah White, William Batson, John Batt, and Lucy Reed’s children. It appearing to my satisfaction that Burwell Dixon, Sarah White, William Batson, John Batt, and Lucy White’s children, reside without the limits of this state, It is therefore ordered, that they appear before me, in court of Ordinary, on or before the 18th day of January next, to object to the sale of the Real Estate of William Batt, deceased, or their consent will be entered of record. Turner Bryan, O.D.C. Nov. 14, 1835 November 17, 1835 ..... A later entry dated January 8th or 12th, 1836 references an upcoming Sheriff’s Sale for “all the lands of Wm. Batts, deceased”. (I believe this is the William Batt referred to in the transcription above). I suspect that John Batt and [perhaps] some of the other individuals mentioned as residing “without the limits of this State” were in New Hanover Co., NC. (In New Hanover Co., NC, there are several deeds between a John Batt and a “William Batt of Chesterfield Co., SC”). I’ve read that there was a “William Batts Horton” in Chesterfield Co., SC, and I suspect this is the same William Horton that is mentioned in the transcription above. Lastly, I’ve seen the name Knight connected with the Batts families of Edgecombe Co., NC. Is there a connection with either of these families to SC? Any insight/info would be appreciated.
