I am a descendant of ELIZABETH RICHARDSON who married JOHN MAYO. The following shows that she was the sister of JOHN RICHARDSON who died in Hanover Co., VA, in 1825. I am posting this because there seems to be much confusion about this family, especially about who their parents were. Richard Richardson is shown in many trees to be their father, but I would like to know what documentation there is for it.

The following is copied from the book without editing.

"HANOVER COUNTY, VA, CHANCERY WILLS AND NOTES," pg. 118-120:

RICHARDSON'S Admr. vs RICHARDSON & Others, 1832 (34)
PULLIUM vs SCOTT & Others, 1832 (28)
KENNON vs. RICHARDSON, 1836 (22)

RICHARDSON, JOHN. "Hanover County, July 30th, 1825. On the 28th Inst. in the last illness of the late JOHN RICHARDSON of this County, the said RICHARDSON apparently directing his discourse to GEORGE FLEMING, ESQ. and myself said that it was his wish that all those who were interested in his estate should contribute their proportions to make up the sum of one thousand Dollars for an illegitimate daughter called JANE, but added this gift is on condition that she lives not with her mother - for if this girl JANE lives with her mother I give her nothing - this was at a time when MRS. PETER WADE and MRS. ROBERT PULLIUM the said RICHARDSON'S near relations were present. Given under my hand the day & date above." SANDY L. MAYO.

At a court of Monthly Session held for Hanover County at the Courthouse on Wednesday the 24th of August 1825. This writing purporting to be the nuncupative last will and Testament of JOHN RICHARDSON, dec'd was produced in Court and was proved by the oath of SANDY L. MAYO the witness thereto. And at a Court at the Courthouse on Monday the 28th of September then next following the said writing was further proved by the oath of GEORGE FLEMING and is ordered to be recorded. Teste, WILLIAM POLLARD. A Copy, Teste, PHILIP B. WINSTON, C.H.C.

JOHN RICHARDSON, of Hanover, Nuncupative will of 28 July 1825, probated 24 August 1825. Witnesses SANDY L. MAYO and GEORGE FLEMING, ESQ. None of his kin applied for administration, the Court appointed FRANCIS W. SCOTT. In 1828 his certificate was revoked, and the Estate committed to JESSE WINN, High Sheriff. Left a considerable estate, including 417 acres of land (not subject to a nuncupative will) and between 30 and 40 slaves. FRANCIS W. SCOTT hired some of the slaves to STEPHEN T. PULLIUM who rehired to JOHN BOWLES, now dec'd 1832, to work on the James River Canal. RICHARDSON was survived by his widow JUDITH who died in North Carolina on 12 June 1840. On 6 December 1837, WM. KENNON of Caswell Co., NC (PETER WADE, witness) certified that he lives about six or seven miles from MRS. JUDITH RICHARDSON, widow of JOHN RICHARDSON, late of Hanover County, and verily believes she is now in better health than she was before she left Virginia. She left no issue by RICHARDSON. His illegitimate daughter:

JANE HOOPER, after the death of JOHN RICHARDSON "made her home in the family of DAVID RICHARDSON, and in the home of his mother and brother-in-law, until she married CHARLES B. RICHARDSON." All of Louisa County.

JOHN RICHARDSON'S only heirs at law were his seven sisters, and their children and grandchildren:

CANNON and JOHN CANNON, "all the right title, etc. in the lands belonging to their Uncle JOHN RICHARDSON in Hanover, also what are entitled to from the widow's dower - the said CANNON having purchased the life interest of the widow of the said JOHN RICHARDSON and all her dower in the said lands." Witness, J. D. ANDREWS. (Signed) WILLIAM CANNON. On 25 Oct 1836, DAVID G. MASON and HANNAH his wife, formerly HANNAH MAYO, being a child of ROBERT MAYO, dec'd, formerly of Chester District, SC, whose wife was formerly MARGARET RICHARDSON, now dec'd, appoints WM. KENNON of Caswell Co., NC, their lawful attorney to recover all money, etc. due them from the Estate of JOHN RICHARDSON, dec'd, or may be due them at the death of JUDITH, wife of JOHN RICHARDSON, dec'd.

"8 December 1837 - Received of ANDERSON BOWLES full satisfaction for all money due JOSIAH CATES, SALLY P. CATES, & URSLY WISDOM from Est. of JOHN RICHARDSON dec'd of Hanover Co. - due from sale of Decedant's landed estate, I have sold to ANDERSON BOWLES - all that part to which PLEASANT COLEMAN now of Georgia is entitled. "11 Feb 1835, WILLIAM T. DANDRIDGE and NANCY his wife, late NANCY PULLIUM, of County of Henry, State of VA...sell to ANDERSON BOWLES of Hanover...their interest in lands of JOHN RICHARDSON, dec'd.

Others mentioned:

ELIZABETH LUNSFORD of Person County, NC: On 25 Nov 1836, "appoints her son ALEXANDER LUNSFORD of same county and state lawful attorney in the matter of JNO. RICHARDSON'S Estate."

ELIZABETH probably a daughter of SALLY and BEVERLY GLENN.

NANCY ATKINSON certified that she lived with JUDITH RICHARDSON nearly five years. She judged on 23 Mar 1838 that JUDITH'S age was 62 or 63 years. States that JUDITH was married about 22 years ago last February and "she then said she was 40 or 41."

SUSAN L. LAMBERT lived with JUDITH RICHARDSON "upwards of a year," and stated on 22 March 1838 that JUDITH'S age was 63 years.

Can anyone connect John Richardson to the David Richardson and Charles B. Richardson mentioned. As stated above, John Richardson's illegitimate daughter Jane Hooper lived in the home of David Richardson in Louisa Co., VA, and later married Charles B. Richardson.
