Robert, I was searching for my elusive Jacob DAVIS, knowing he was in TN... came across this posting. This is Cocke County TN. I know your Robert is in Georgia, but thought I would pass it on anyway. Donna EAST TENNESSEE Tennessee officially became the 16th state on June 1, 1796, and Carter County was created two months earlier on April 9 by the First General Assembly of Tennessee. The territory that made up Carter County was removed from Washington County, and the new county was named after Landon Carter, who was a Revolutionary War soldier and son of John Carter, a prominent Wataugan leader Cocke County, located at the foot of the Great Smokey Mountains, was created by an act of the state's general assembly on Oct. 9, 1797, from part of Jefferson County. It was named after William Cocke, a prominent military leader, civil officer and landowner in Tennessee. He was also one of the first two U.S. senators from Tennessee.
