I am searching for information on a John SHIRLEY born around 1790 in SC, I think in Anderson Co. He married Elizabeth (Shumate???) b GA about 1794, whose family was said to be from Anderson Co. SC. They moved to Henry County in the southeastern corner of AL. There is plenty of information on them going forward from the 1850 Henry Co. AL census. According to family history, John's parents "came over on the boat" to South Carolina from Great Britain. His father was said to be Irish and mother English. The story goes that he and a brother left SC to explore and find a place to settle, with intentions of meeting up in a year in SC, but in the meanwhile the parents may have died and the brothers were never to find one another. I suppose each resulting branch would regard the other as the lost branch of the Shirleys. Any takers?
