One of Chance's granddaughters just died last year. The Hiott name has died out among Afro-Americans, as far as I know. Chance, I am told, was the son of a white Hiott planter's daughter and a slave father --sort of unusual for S.C. in 1853. When he grew up, he married a mulatto girl in the area (Colleton Co., SC) whose father was a German immigrant (Gruber) and mother was a slave -- more the norm. The wife inherited a large estate of land from her Gruber father, so the Chance Hiotts were land rich for a couple of generations. I am not researching this line much, but the Magwood and Bouges families probably intermarried with Chance's family.
