Thanks Shonda. I logged into my Ancestry DNA account, found Paul Michael SAYRES and compared his 46 markers to mine. There are 14 genetic differences, and we do not have a recent common ancestor (MRCA = 0 generations).
What this indicates to me is that your cousin is not related to Thomas SAYRE. My logic is based on my exact match to Jerry Wayne SAYRE, a documented and direct paternal descendant of Thomas via his son Job (1612-1694). Disclaimer: Jerry is the only documented SAYRE descendant (apart from my father) that has participated in Y-DNA testing. He and several of his relatives have collaborated and therefore I'm confident of my relationship. At least two other SAYRE descendants have indicated their interest in participating in Y-DNA testing soon, and assuming exact matches and MRCA of 1-3 generations, I'll conclude that I am a direct descendant of Thomas SAYRE.
Banta (1901) indicates the first SEARS spelling occurred in the line of Daniel, Sr., specifically several of Nathan's descendants (p. 48). I'm working on this now and will post a follow up in few minutes.
Regards,
gm
