George Dennis SAYER (b 1915 Hull, England-d.1962 Florida, USA)
Hello, I wonder if anyone can help me.I am still, after several years, searching for any more information about GEORGE DENNIS SAYER and whether he had any children.
He was born in Hull, Yorkshire, England, 28 October 1915 to WILLIAM EDGAR SAYER(known as Edgar) and his wife, SUSAN(nee BIRKBECK).George was taken to US by his mother to join William in 1916(via Ellis Island)
Initially the family lodged in Jamestown, New York State, but by 1920, according to the census for Buffalo, they were living in a rooming house in Fargo Avenue. William was working as a french polisher. It is believed George may have had a brother, Louis, who probably died as an infant as no details have yet been found about him.
It is thought the the family split up before William's death in 1922.
The next we hear of Susie Sayer and her son is in 1924, when Susie remarried. The name of her second husband was JOSEPH BETTS. Joseph (b.1883 Crewe,England)was working as an apprentice Bricksetter when in 1911 he sailed for New York.
Anyway, by 1930 Susie, now aged 47, was living in Jamestown, Chantugua County, New York State with Joseph and her son George now aged 15 (she had no further children with Joseph).Unfortunately, little is known about the family after that time.
There are 2 references in the US Social Security Death Index to Joe Betts- one died in California in 1963, the other in Arkansas in 1967.If one of these is Joseph was Susie living in one of these states for a time?
The same index lists a Susan Sayer being issued a social security no. in New Jersey though when isn't known. However, Susie was living in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey at the time of her death in 1973, at the age of about 89.If this is the same Susie she had for some reason reverted to her first married name, having outlived her son George (who died in 1962 aged only 47) by 11 years, and her husband Joe by roughly 8 years.
And George?Well, at the age of 28 US military records indicate that during WW2 George Dennis Sayer enrolled in the US Army. His veteran Service covered the period 29 Jan 1943 - 27 Jan 1946 and he reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. No more is known until 1962 when George, now a Hotel Manager, and married, fell ill while living at 111 Hillcrest Street, Altamonte Springs, Seminole County. He was admitted to the VA medical Center hospital in Bay Pines, Pinellas County, Florida where, after 10 days, he died on 18th July 1962, aged only 46.He was buried at the US National Veterans Cemetery in Pinellas County on 23 July. No details of his wife or whetrher he had any children are known.
Finally, who was the Mary Jane Sayer (born c.1858)who sailed from GB to Ellis island in 1912 ( Residence in England given as Havelock Street, Hull).A relative??
Please do help if you can.
I've got masses of informationn about most of the Yorkshire and Durham based Sayers so am happy to swop information.
Thanks
Laurel Sayer
