Kathryn, thank you. I am collecting John Saxons, hoping to identify 'mine' or at least eliminate the others. I have ruled out the husbands of Sarah Butterworth (m. 1786) and Sarah Siddon (m. 1795) -- and Martha Bertenshaw (m. 1813), whom you mention. Two possibilities remain: John Saxon m. Sarah Walker at St Mary’s, Manchester on 21 May 1799; and John Saxon m. Sarah Grimshaw in Manchester on 11 Dec 1808. Do you know if either of these couples had a daughter Mary Ann, born in 1820 or 1821?

My ancestor seems to have come from Ashton-under-Lyne, moved to Blackburn and later settled in Manchester, where he was a musick-instrument maker at 17 Oldham St in 1840. Of course there may be another John Saxon who married a Sarah in Lancashire or Cheshire between 1785 and 1821, that I don't know about. Any hints gratefully accepted.
Gerard
