Thank you for your reply. I have been working on a mystery. In September 1879 there was an Eltira Franklin Saxon born in Chickasaw County. He died in Hulbert, OK in the 1920's and his death certificate said his parents were E. F. Saxon and Felie Howard. He was raised by Ella Saxon and her husband, Anderson James Stewart, of Beat 5 Calhoun County. Ella was Eltira Saxon's sister.

In 1880 Tie, six months old, was in the household of Lucinda Foster, the grandmother of the Howard children. J. A. Howard married Frances A Foster, daughter of Lucinda, and they had several children. J. A. Howard and Frances Foster died before 1870, leaving several children, most of whom were raised by Lucinda Foster.

One of the Howard children was Elmira Howard and she was in Lucinda's household in 1880. There was a six month old "Tie" in the household, a grandson to Lucinda. He was not the son of Elmira. Tie grew up in the Ella Saxon/Anderson Stewart household. He moved to Hulbert, OK around 1918 along with a son of Elmira Howard. These families were in contact through the years and it was common knowledge that Elmira Howard was a sister to Tie's mother.

So, my question.....was Tie an out of wedlock child? It is assumed that Tie's mother must have died in childbirth.

In Mississippi, it has always been the law that an out of wedlock child carry the mother's maiden name. That would mean that Tie should have been named "Howard." Why was he named Saxon?

Then, to muddy the waters further, there is a marriage in Tate County, MS for E. F. Saxon in T. E. Howard in 1883. Tate County is in northwest Mississippi. I can't find any Howards or Saxons there in census records.
