Thank you, Eleanor, for responding to my query. I have your book, "Sawyer Families of New England" and find it very useful. I am seeking to fill in Flora Sawyer's husband's Whitney line. A helpful response to my query has been posted by Patricia Wood in the Penobscot Co., Maine, forum.

I agree that my grandmother, Flora Sawyer Packard, was probably named for her mother's sister Flora who died as a child. By coincidence this week I met an elderly woman named Flora who is sharing a room with my wife who was just admitted to a rehab center after hip surgery. Flora is the unusual old-fashioned name of the Roman goddess of flowers. Some of my grandmother's relatives referred to her by the pet form, Aunt Flo.
