Sawtelle in Civil War

I am looking for information about an unknown Sawtelle who served in the Civil War as an officer at Fort Monroe VA. My gt gt grandfather supposedly served as a "civilian wagonmaster" under command of Tallmadge and Sawtelle. Because he was serving in a civilian capacity there are few, if any records available to me. So I would like to learn as much as I can about the military units operating there in 1862 in hopes of finding clues.
