Some Sauvage's were derived from the noble LeSauvage family that has roots back to a Thomas LeSauvage, a Norman knight that rode with William the Conquerer in 1055 when he took control of England.
Many LeSauvage families could be of this same ancestry, but lacking a complete document trail to be certain.
Other Sauvages were native americans that were baptized by French Catholic priests and given the surname of Sauvage or LeSauvage (The Sauvage) by the priest.
There may be others, I'm just familiar with these two origins.
