My GGGrandfather was Adam SAHM, who moved from Germany and ended up in Franklin Co. IN to farm around 1835 (1840 census mentions no mother).
My great-grandfather, Martin SAUM (s(b. 1843), was orphaned at age 17, and went to work at the James M. STOKES' farm in Butler Co. OH (surname was SAM on 1860 Butler Co. OH Census) until serving in the 35th O.V.I. during the Civil War.
In 1865, he married Mary Eleanor THOMAS at Seven Mile (Butler Co. OH) and lived in the Middletown/Jacksonburg area until 1884 when he and his family moved to IL.
He undoubtedly landed in NY and then possibly traveled through PA, and down the Ohio River to the Cincinnati area.
Do you have anything relating to this in your newletters, etc.?
