The following is a composite of what I have learned about my Satterwhite relatives. Most of it came from this Forum with a few facts added by me.I did not cite all the writers, as they were quoting other sources as well. You know who your are and we thank you.
THE MEANING OF THE NAME "SATTERWHITE"
The surname "Satterwhite" is derived from the geographical location from which these people came. It refers to a "settlement in the thwiate or woodland clearing." The Satterwhites were "Norsemen" who first migrated to England and then on to America.According to Clyda Angeli and Thomas Satterwhite's early research the Satterwhite name is derived from Satterthwaite and other similar names. The origins of the name as listed in the Dictionary of Names comes from England and means "near the Glen". The village of Satterthwaite is located north of Lancaster England and still contains about 20 thatched-roof huts. Both Clyda and Thomas have visited the original family site. The family migrated to England around 900 AD from Denmark.
The records indicate that Satterwhite is the original name with Satterthaite, Satterlee, and a couple others being derivatives. The 'records' also state the the name is Welsh and means ..... White house (cottage) in the valley. There are records of 3 brothers (Satterwhite's) who settled in VA in the late 1500s. These brothers arrived from Wales.Other early records refer to Satterwhites found in the New World in the Valentine Papers which are early court records which reference Satterwhites in the Virginia area around 1640. The papers reference many interesting court records to include tobacco sales, slave trades, wills etc. The counties of Gouchester, Henrico etc are located along the tidewater regions of the state. There also was an onclave of Satterwhites along the Rappahanok River in VA.Many of the counties have since changed names and need to be crossed-referenced. The Virginia Satterwhites migrated to NC near Granville. The 1850 Census of Granville County lists over 50 individuals named Satterwhite. There is a Satterwhite Point near Henderson NC which also has a Satterwhite Cemetery.Other Satterwhites migrated to SC and into Georgia. The 1820 GA census has Satterwhite in Harris, Troupe, Ebert, and Ogelthrope Counties. Many of these Satterwhites came to Georgia via Virginia following the Revolutionary War and received Land Bounties for their service. As lands depleted from farming practices, they continued to migrate to new lands being opened in Alabama, Mississippi and Texas. Many lines went from VA-GA-TN-MO-TX-ID. There are many similarities found in names which leads one to conclude that the Satterwhites all have a common link.
The English Satterwhites were "Quakers" (Society of Friends). With the advent of George Fox and the persecution that surrounded the Society of Friends, a great many "Quakers" migrated to the New World. The Register of the Society of Friends at their commencement about 1650 shows the existence of four families in a Hawkshead Meeting. Hawkshead was the name of the area in which they were living. The following is a copy of a certificate given to William Satterthwaite at a monthly meeting in Swathmoore when Mr. Satterthwaite was leaving for America. The note is dated 12-5-1733.
"These lines may certify Friends that the bearer hereof William Satterthwaite, son of Michael Satterthwaite and Esther his wife, belonging unto this Monthly Meeting hath this day signified unto us that for some time he hath inclined to remove himself unto your Province, to reside their amongst you. This may certify all to whom it may come, that his removal is with the allowance and approbation of his parents, with whom he had a sober education and hath been since the time minority of a sober and orderly life and conversation, and is clear from all women in these parts on account of marriage, as far as we know, and also clear of contracting of any debts, being an able and industrious workman in the tilling of the ground or husbandry, according to the manner of this county. We do recommend him as a person in union and fellowship with us, and your care, sincerely desiring he may be preserved in the way of piety and virtue and, that your regard may be unto him for his food in all respects. So with sincere love we conclude and remain your Friends and Brethren."
This document was signed by Michael Satterthwaite, Ester Satterthwaite, Elizabeth Satterthwaite, John Satterthwaite, and others who were members of the Society of Friends.
