The Dictionary of American Family Names, Oxford University Press, ISBN 0-19-508137-4 states:
Satterfield - English: variant of Satterthwaite.
Satterthwaite - English: habitational name from a place in the Lake District, so named from Old English sætr ‘shieling’ + Old Norse þveit ‘pasture.’
