Hi Dion ~
I believe it it true also, just by looking at preliminary numbers. I believe I had even told you in our previous emails that a preliminary match of a 12 marker of a Langlais descendant from Canada that tested with FTDNA on those 12 markers matched my line on our Sargent's,(here in America) But I also explained I was told Langlais descendants need to upgrade to do further testing so that it can be analyzed. Also explained was that a 12 marker YDNA test was not conclusive in any way, at least genetically going back to previous generations. FTDNA(Family Tree DNA, the genetic Testing Laboratories firm we used) I have been in contact with consultants. Without using the participants name for privacy, One Test was finalized as we speak on a descendant of LT John(one of the sons of Digory). We also did a 25 marker YDNA test on my Sargent line, that which to date, was not known to be related.(results are NOT final on the 37 marker upgrade though.) (I had previously thought we "may be" related to the Digory line, due to matching numbers on some of our preliminary 12 markers)
As I stated, I had never thought previously that our line of Sargents(Sergeant)were connected in any way to Digory's previous to this DNA testing.I always dismissed it in fact. I then ordered and upgraded my Uncle's testing to the 37 marker, and that test to date, has not be completed. But my cousin, another member of my Sargent line, has had completed the 37 marker results.
So to date, There are a few mutations in these two lines, but that is not really significant to rule us out as of yet. I know the markers do not have to match 100% and anyone thinking that is very wrong! So far what I am seeing is pretty "close" matches in the Alleles values.. But again, one can not say for certainty and I am going to let the experts explain it all to us in the end, as I have had several people explain it differently and I do not think they are correct. I have done this with another surname project. Those markers do not need to match EXACTLY. I know this to be 100% true because a known male Sargent cousin of mine in this Sargent line, also tested. It was no surprise that both he and my Uncle have DNA that matched most markers values can and do mutate over time. They can mutate up or down one or even 2points in either direction.
I hope others also realize this. Yes I do agree with you Dion, The Langlais in Canada are true descendant's of Digory Sargent, at least, looking at the markers in the preliminary stages we are at, I would say absolutely this far, it looks that way. But I will wait until others test to get the final analysis. I am not expert, but I can also read, and it is my understanding that people need to realize that those Alleles# values can and do mutate over time and generations. Not by much, but they can and do.
I will wait for the upgrade on the STR of my Uncle 's DNA before I say anything further. It is expected 9/22.
Please do keep in contact with me Dion!
Sincerely,
Penny Kresl
