Lloyd, I think you are right.father said that we were decended from William who had settled Amesbury. But then when I started to do the genealogy, and found out there was more than one WILLIAM I began to doubt myself.I think there was a Bejamin in my ancestry. There was a Benjamin living in Amesbury Ma and I would ask Father if we were related to him but he would say no but you do have another Benjamin that was related. There was a BENJAMIN in Maine. In my searching tonight on the net I read where one of the SARGENTs of Maine sailed with John Paul Jones. Hmmm! that rang a bell nothing definitive but Dad seemed facinated with John Paul Jones and he would take me to Portsmouth, New Castle to look over the old graves of old sailors of that time frame. He must have had a reason beyond just curiosity.
I did find a CHARLES SARGENT on a census as living in BERWICK in 1840 also saw a CHARLES SARGENT applying for Maine Bounty Land. Perhaps you can help me with this part: it says "Place of enlistment YORK temporarily in Portsmouth NH" What does that mean??
Thanks Jane
