First of all, William didn't "get" land from the Earl of Granville, he bought it from the land office the Earl's representatives were running in NC, so I expect he didn't care anything about the Earl.
Second, as Virginia pointed, several of his sons and sons-in-law are documented Patriots.In addition to Stephen and Joseph, there are also military records for James (who later served in the VA House of Burgesses).I believe there are also records for son-in-law Joseph Gold.
Third, the early Sargents are believed to have been Baptists, Methodists, or possibly Presbyterian.Anything but Church of England, which means they were probably persecuted to some extent by the religious authorities of their day.
Of course, as far as William goes, its prettymuch a moot point.1768 is just too early for anyone to have had an opinion on this issue, which really didn't develop until the 1770s.
