Hi Liz - I wonder if you can help me? My family are Meakins from Market Drayton. My ancestor was John Meakin married to Sarah Griffith in 1843. They had 1 son, James, and 2 daughters, Ellen and Fanny. I am descended from Ellen, who had a daughter Fanny who had my grandfather Leonard. However I have always thought that neither Ellen nor her daughter Fanny were married as the names on the birth certificates stayed as Meakin and there was no father listed. However, I now have a copy of the 1891 census for John and Sarah and on it is listed Sarah E. (aged 19), Fanny (18 - the correct age for my Fanny), Beatrice E (13) and Edith M (10) - all of whom are listed as granddaughters of John and Sarah - and this is where you come in - the surname is Sargeant. The only way I can see Sargeant fitting in is if Ellen did eventually marry a Sargeant and Fanny started calling herself by that name, however that doesn't explain Sarah aged 19 - I have never come across her before. It is all very confusing. I hope you can shed some light if there is a tie-in with your family.

Thanks, Diane
