I think I'm going to disapoint you, Sardinia and Sicily are two different Islands both belonging to Italy but Sicily is only about half an hour ferry journey fron main land south of Italy and sardinia in about twelve hours journey by "ferry" boat to central Italy.I suppose that the cases that you have learnt about are from the south of main land Italy or in Sicily. Hear in Sardinia there is the "Anemia Mediterranio" which was transmitted many many years ago by mosquito's giving malaria to the area's of Caglieri ( the capital of Sardinia) and Orosei the area in which I live due to the fact of the marsh type lands and stagnant waters. The natural defence of human genes created over the years a diffence to malaria creating "animia mediterranio" and "favissimo" another genetic ilness which afects allot of Sardinian's .... they don't produce an enzime of which helps them digest peas and fava beans causing them to have anemia and often attacts causing death even if there are plants (of beans and peas) nearby.
Please excuse my english in explaining this but as I have been living here in Italy for the last twenty odd years and the facts of these illness's being explained to me in Italian.....and not studied medical terms in english as a young lass!!
