Hi Gail, I live in a small village called Galtellì in the province of Nuoro. luckly my husbands family are not carriers of anemia mediterranea but I do know of friends who have family members with this genetic illness. One of whom has a niece and nephew with this problem the girl had a transplant but the lad has refused , they were offered the bone marrow of their cousins , the parents of these are two sisters married to two brothers so they were very lucky in finding a perfect match. Also another friends daughter 17 years old has the same problem and she has also refused the transplant after seeing many of her friends from hospital over the years go through the op and many rejecting ... I need not say anymore. They have made alot of progress's in identifyiny the genes whilst in pregnacy so less children are born ill and most are just carriers. There is a big centre in Caglieri where they do alot of research. Where do you live ? Have you italian origins or just your husband ? Annette Notify Administrator about this message?
