Help needed 1700's Sangster geneology
Hi folks
My family history is fairly well in hand on this side of the ocean (Canada) and I am trying to make the leap to Scotland, Ireland, and knowing that some information probably now resides in England.I am hoping that I can obtain some indication of historical events, sources of information and perhaps luck into someone who might actually know some real detail.I am descended from Joseph Sangster (married to Margaret Mann) who, as United Empire Loyalists, left New York City, probably in October 1783, overwintered in Port Mouton, Nova Scotia, then settled in Guysborough, Nova Scotia in June 1784.The information pertaining to the United Kingdom that I have is as follows;
1. It seems probable that Joseph was employed (as a civilian??) in the Commissary Generals Department of the British Forces during the Revolutionary war (1776 – 1783).
2. Land Grant applications indicate that his oldest son James was born in Ireland (I assume what is now Northern Ireland)- date unknown but probably 1770 to 1777 range??
3. The only possible birth evidence I obtained is from IGI where there is a record of the birth of a Joseph Sangster in Fraserburgh, Aberdeen on 22 Feb. 1748.The date is reasonable and the father is cited as James, the same as the first son, which conforms to the practice of naming children after elders in the family.
It would be appreciated if anyone can suggest a strategy for continuing this research.Why the move to Ireland, is there a historical event.Do the British Archives contain records of civilians employed by the military in the 1700’s, etc, etc,
I would appreciate any comment.
