Sanford Family Genealogy Forum

A group of us England > VA Sanfords now have a working hypothesis on where we split off from the very well documented Sandford-Sanford line that went to Essex and then to New England. We have enough of a sampling to show our common descent from our Virginia Colonist, Robert Sanford of Westmoreland County. Now we’d like to test our hypothesis, which involves the Nynehead Court and Somerset Sandfords, to see if we match folks who can trace back to Shropshire and other English Sandfords.
Y-chromosome marker analysis of Sanford-surnamed males is the basis of this DNA study. If you’ve had this analysis performed, we’d like to compare your results with ours to prove our common ancestor hypothesis. If you haven’t, but would be interested in adding to the body of Sanford Family knowledge, we welcome your participation. Upon application, our group may have the ability to financially subsidize a small number of tests. The test method involves scraping the inside of your cheek then returning the sample to the laboratory for analysis. It’s quick, easy and painless; no more involved than brushing your teeth.
Only testing of male Sanfords is possible because of the unique Y-chromosome which is passed-down, essentially unchanged, from father to son through the generations since the dawn of time. If you’re not familiar with this new genealogy tool, complete information can be found at www.familytreedna.com. Our testing coordinator is Joe Sanford; please contact me using my address associated with this post (a click away, as a web spider-proof graphic), and I will send you his e-mail address.
We would greatly appreciate your helping us and adding to the body of knowledge of Sanford origins in general!
