Sands/Sandys DNA Project

Greetings Fellow Researcher,

The Sands/Sandys line has many branches around the world and I'm sure many have run into the proverbial "brick wall". The information below has been put together for those who have questions about the new and exciting genealogical DNA test! This is the newest way to help us get past all the "brick walls" we’ve run into when we couldn’t find anything else about our lines. Below I have included several sites that will give you more information explaining what genealogical DNA is all about and should help answer most of your questions. I too, have hit brick walls in my research. This is why I have gotten onto this "bandwagon" in hope of finding answers.

Only the male carries the Y-Chromosome and it is passed down from father to son, virtually unchanged for hundreds of generations. The DNA test won't give you specific names, but will compare your DNA to others who have been tested to see if you and any of them match. If they do, the lab will notify you and the person who matches. It depends on how close the match as to how many generations back they have a common ancestor. Then you and that person can get together and compare notes and names and hopefully find your missing links. There are testimonies on these websites from people who have gotten great results from their tests. The more names we can get in our database, from Sands/Sandys all over the country, the more likely we will be able to locate where our particular line originated.

DNA testing can and will tell you also which lines you are NOT connected to, so you can stop trying to find a match with that one, and concentrate on the more promising lines. I am hoping to get a good database of Sands tested, so that we will have more and more lines to compare. The more markers tested, the more definitive the outcome. In the bottom link below you will find the Sands Surname Project site. You can order a kit through here and save a good bit of money over ordering it through other sources. For example, a 12 marker kit is $99 vs. $160 elsewhere. The savings are on each marker level and you are automatically included in the Sands Surname Project. Although only the Sands/Sandys men can be tested for the Y chromosome the Sands women can help by encouraging their fathers, brothers, uncles, and male cousins with the Sands/Sandys surname to take part. Some women in the line are helping with the finances for others to have the test.

I hope you will decide to join us in searching for our common ancestors and have your line tested.

If you have any other questions, please contact me at mahkelley@comcast.net.

http://www.familytreedna.com/default.asp This is the website for the company who does the actual testing. There is a lot of information about the test and what the results will and can show you.

http://worldfamilies.net/ This website is where the Sands Website is/will be set up. They also have a lot of information on the Y-Chromosome testing on males and the mtDNA testing for women. This site is the actual site of the Sands Surname Project where you can order the test kits. The form is here, as well as the choices of tests and their prices. Your results will automatically be added to this Project and by ordering through this page, you get a very good discount on the test. (A $60 savings between doing it on your own rather than as a part of our group)
