I have a copy of a newspaper article explaining Elijah's death. According to it Elijah, 50, was killed by Letcher Deaton at his home on Long's Creek while resisting arrest. He was being charged with stealing hogs. Deaton, who was not a sheriff's deputy, was commissioned by Esquire S.S. Herald to arrest Sandlin. When Elijah resisted Deaton shot Elijah and Elijah died a short time later from the wound. The article is dated Friday December 28, 1928 and another article on Friday January 4, 1929 also discusses the incident. Unfortuantly, I do not have the name of the newspaper, as the article had been copied and passed on to me.
