Well, to be honest, Trudi, I've never been sure of the parentage of James Sandison, b. about 1756.I recall having seen genealogies on the net giving his parents and his grandfather Magnus Sandysone, but I've never seen the basis for these connections.Although I'm sure that he was from the parish of So. Ronaldsha, I'm not sure that he was born there.I do believe he was born in the Orkneys somewhere, and do not believe that he was Metis.For one thing, he is described as having had a fair complexion.
As for his death, I note that he served at Carlton House during the 1815-1816 season, at the end of which he was described as "superannuated".But in Red River accounts of 1820-1821, he is described as "dead".I presume he had retired to Red River about 1818, and died about 1819, leaving an account balance.He may well have been involved with the short-lived Birsay settlement before he died.
