I believe that. Adoptions happened when the family believed they couldn't provided for that child and would find another "wealthier" family that possibly had more land and holdings that could better provide. My great grandfather was adopted. It was very normal to have several children in those days, my grandfather told me the reason for that was so that the children would be raised to help out around the farm. A lot of times the children did not attend school....education was not priority in the 1800's and very early 1900's. My grandfather only had a third grade education, my grandmother had none and my great grandparents did not know how to read or write and could not speak english their entire lives and they lived to be 90!!!!!!!
