COLLIER – SAMSON/SAMPSON, NORWICH/HUNTINGTON, MASS. TO OHIO

My g-g-grandparents John Collier (1802, Boston – 1882, Gratiot Cty., Michigan) and Mary Samson/Sampson (1804, probably Norwich, Hampshire Cty., Mass. – 1850, Mantua, Portage County, Ohio) married in Chesterfield, Hampshire Cty., Mass. Dec. 5, 1822, then moved to Vermont, western New York and the area of Auburn, Geauga Cty., Ohio. They were in Ohio by 1836 and I can trace most of their descendants from that time.

I would like to correspond with descendants of the Samson family to confirm on-going research. I have found no birth record for Mary Samson (her spelling, although “Sampson” was becoming more common in the period), but I think it likely that she was a grand-daughter of Joseph Samson (November 16, 1719, Duxbury, Mass. – after 1798, probably Norwich, Hampshire Cty., Mass.) and his 2d wife, Mary Hall of Kingston, Mass. Her father could have been either Kenelm (various spellings, bap. July 23, 1762, Duxbury – probably the individual who d. Dec 1850 in Norwich), wife probably Molly Williams, or Sylvanus (bap. July 12, 1767, Duxbury – date and place of death unknown, but likely after 1809), wife probably Mehetable Curtis.

The ancestry of Joseph Samson goes back to Abraham (1) Samson, who arrived in Duxbury possibly as early as 1629-1630. Abraham (2) Samson married Lorah Standish, dau. of Alexander Standish and Sarah Alden, so the Norwich Samsons can trace their ancestry back to the Mayflower. Joseph and most of his family disappear from Duxbury records after July 1774, and were in Norwich, Hampshire Crt., not later than 1780. (The name of the town of Norwich, settled in the 1760s, was changed to Huntington in 1855, although there is still a village named Norwich.)

Joseph’s son Kenelm had at least two sons: Kenelm, Jr. (ca. 1799, probably Norwich – after 1880, probably Munson Twp., Geauga Cty., Ohio) who m. Serepta (various spellings) Beswick in Chesterfield, Jan. 1, 1823) and moved to Auburn, Geauga Cty., about 1839; and Samuel, who m. Sarah Tilden and remained in Chesterfield.

Joseph’s other son in Norwich, Sylvanus, had a son of the same name, b. about 1807 – 1809, likely in Norwich or Chesterfield, who may be the individual who was in Chardon, Geauga Cty., Ohio in 1880. (Chardon and Munson Twp. adjoin.)

Also of interest in the Joseph Samson family is daughter Celia (bap. Aug. 12, 1764 – d. after November 28, 1840, Pomfret Twp., Chautauqua Cty, New York). She m. Seth Cole, Sr. in Norwich, September 15, 1780 and the family later moved to New York state. They were the first settlers of Dunkirk or Fredonia, Chautauqua Cty., New York. Although Seth died in 1810, Celia and one or more of her children were still in area in 1830, when John Collier and Mary Samson were, I believe, the family listed in
Stockton, some 10-15 miles to the south of Fredonia.

I would like to correspond with any descendants of these Samson families. I am preparing the second volume in a genealogy of The Colliers of Massachusetts, and the Collier-Samson connections will be covered in that book.
