I found these on a website for Lumms of the Mid-Atlantic Seaboard, and they were listed as possible misspellings for Lum(s) or Lumm(s). That theory could also work in reverse for some of us researchers :)

The following are names appearing in Loudoun Tithables for 1749-1786 (a 3-volume set):

John Semms p 142
Edward Sams p 195
Edwd Samms p 333
Edwd Sams near Joshua Gore & Joseph Clowes p 526
Edward Sams near Richard Thatcher, Nicholas Osborne & Joshua Gore p 546
John Simms & John Simms Jr. near Joseph Gore, Nicholas Osborne & Richard Thatcher p 607
Elias Sams
Edward Samms near Nicholas Osborn p 712
