Joe I do not know where the Sampley name originated. One Sample researcher suggested that our people once lived in Brittany France in the city of St. Paul. This researcher seemed to think that the name was gradually shortened from "St Paul" to "Sample". Another writer said that our people were French Huguenots thousands of years ago. I have always been told that our Sampley family came from Ireland. Some say they came from England. I think we can all agree that they came from the same general area. In the early records our people signed their name as "Sample". I have always wondered why they later added the "Y".
