I noticed your inquiry especially the MERCER COUNTY part. My Thompson's settled in MERCER (now Lawrence) County about 1800. Now to SAMPLE.
I am related to a family surnamed “White” in which the surname “Sample” appears as a middle name in the mid-1800s. I am guessing but I think it plausible that a “Sample” was the wife of some ancestor of said “White” family. I have two possible unknown female surnames One is REBECCA (1791-1844) of John White (1783-1849) of Beaver county, Pennsylvania (that part now part of Lawrence County, PA). A second plausible female antecedent would be the mother of Martha Williamson Thompson (1791-1866), wife of Archibald Thompson (1785-1834). I do not know the name of the father of Williamson, yet. Likewise, I do not know the mother’s name. I just noted the use of surnames as given names elsewhere among the children of James White (1822-1882) and his wife Eliza Jane Thompson, a quo Mrs. Martha Sample (White) Cameron. This proclivity for surname use is greatly reduced aamong the other whites – but is a phenomenon of my Thompson connection.
Admittedly, this is a likely blind alley. ALL OF THESE PEOPLE (named above) DIED AND ARE BURIED IN LAWRENCE COUNTY, PA.
However, I do know that other unrelated families – but families who settled in what was Beaver (now Lawrence) county had connections (who moved from Pennsylvania) who settled in Loudon county, Virginia as early as 1773. This is all speculation but sort of informed speculation on my part. However, I noted what I had thought the quaint middle names might be surnames. Such use of surnames as given names appears elsewhere in that particular family of White.
