Thanks to some help from a friend, I did find out that my "grandpa" sample's name was William, and he would have been thirty at the time of the census. Here is what she sent to me.

"I was out at Hillside Cemetery, Redlands, today, and this is what I found.
Rena E Sample born 9/11/1873, Kansas, died 4/8/1951. Interred at Hillside on 4/11/1951. Cause of death: carcinoma. Services handled by F Arthur Cortner Chapel, Redlands. Next of kin handling her affairs was Mrs May Jacob, sister, 690 Orange Ave, Yuma, AZ.
William Atlas Sample died 2/16/1929 at age of 80 yrs 1 mo, couldn't read the days - possibly 4 or 11. He was born in Illinois. Interred 2/18/1929. F Arthur Cortner Chapel. Next of kin handling his affairs was Rena E Sample.
There is also a Jacob Sample 1881-1946 buried in the same cemetery.
I will look for obits on Rena and William, but it will take awhile to get them. I took photos of their markers."

I'll let you know as soon as i find any more information.
