Hi Matthew Sammons In Delaware. I am from this line of Sammons. In Delaware the family was neither black or white but came from theDelaware Indinas. During this time perod that they were born and forward it was not told in public aboutthe family heritage. It was told in the families only that you stayed with and married your own kind. The state of Delware labeled our folks black or white, mulatto, colored, black but would never acknowledge indian for race, It was pretty ough at times witht he color thing and that was why theyand others moved from Delaware to"pass", hoping to mak it an easier life for them and their children. I found this very intresting what you wrote that you found since it seems they tried tomake a better life but other states still 'labeled' our folks the same way at home here. If you were light you got white if the census takers didnt know the familyif they did you were labeled whatever they wanted to, if you were dark then it was automaticallya non white clasification. o I am sure that is why theyended up out there, Some of the family also went to Canada and Michigan to wit other families from Del. of thisindian race of people.
