Effie M. Salyer Lane, age 88, of the A.P. Carter Highway, Hiltons, VA, went to be with the Lord Monday, Sept. 24, 2007, at her residence after a period of declining health. She was the daughter of the late Jessie and Roba Davis Salyer of Scott County, VA. She was a homemaker and a member of the Beech Grove (Blue Springs) Primitive Baptist Church but had in the past attended the Log House Church of Weber City, VA. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Maynard McMurray, and her second husband, William C. Lane; two sons, Cecil McMurray and an infant son, along with four sisters and two brothers. She is survived by two daughters, Shirley McMurray and husband Dale of Hiltons, VA, and Norma Calhoun and husband Jimmy of Gate City, VA; two stepdaughters, Phyllis France and husband Lennis of Kingsport, TN, and Frances Dingus and husband Ralph of Blountville, TN; four grandchildren, Sandy Martin, Michael Calhoun, Josh Calhoun and Justin Calhoun; step-grandchildren, Tracy and Stephen Dingus, Penny Aquino, Lisa Arnold, Gwen Parker and Marty France; two great-grandchildren, Hope Calhoun and Haley Martin; step-great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Jeremy, Brittany, Terrance, Payton, Mylinda, Dathan, Nathan, Joseph, Gabriel, Laken, Jessica and Jared; four sisters, Emma Grizzle of Bristol, VA, Martha Grizzle of Gate City, VA, Dora Fugate of Gastonia, NC, and Mamie Vaughn of Kingsport, TN; one brother, Jessie Salyer Jr. of Hiltons, VA; several nieces and nephews; and cousins and others also survive. Calling hours: Wednesday evening, Sept. 26, 2007, from 5 until 8 p.m. at Scott County Funeral Home. The funeral will be Thursday afternoon, Sept. 27, 2007, at 2 p.m. in the west chapel of the funeral home. The Rev. Ken Pierce will officiate. Music will be provided by True Faith. Burial will follow in the Holston View Cemetery with grandsons serving as pallbearers.
