Is Gurdon F. Saltonstall the great-grandson of Governor Gurdon Saltonstall of Connecticut? What is his ancestry between the two? I believe that Gurdon F. Saltonstall and his wife, Hannah Hemptead Saltonstall, moved with the George D. Avery party to Belleville in Wood County (West) Virginia in 1796 and lived on a town lot in Belleville for a period of time before moving to Ohio. There are records to that effect in the Wood County Deed Books. Hannah was the sister of Samuel Booth Hempstead, both children of Nathaniel and Hannah Booth Hempstead of New London, Connecticut. They were part of the Avery migration because Samuel Hempstead's second wife was Esther Richards Prentiss, sister of George Avery's wife, Mary Richards Avery. In other words, they were all connected by marriage, though their last names were different. If anyone out there can verify any of this, please email me directly at psturm@ovc.edu. I am writing a dissertation and need to get some verification. Philip Sturm, Department of History, Ohio Valley College, Vienna, WV 26105
