I descend from a Naona/Ona/Oney Salmons whom I believe to be the first child from the union of Thomas Salmons (son of Rowland Salmons and Frankie Carter) and Artemesia Frazier (daughter of Williams Frazier and Artie Elkins), who were married April 28, 1823. My problem is proving this lineage on paper. Many researchers seem to believe the only known child of Thomas Salmons and Artemancia Frazier was ROWLAND SALMONS (born 1826? at Floyd County, KY). However, I know that Oney was born in Floyd County. A search of the records for the 1830 Census in Kentucky, reveals that there were only three Salmons/Solmons listed in Floyd County - Thomas, and his parents Rowland and Frances (Franky) Solmons. The 1830 census reveals that in his house Thomas has a son under five (obviously Rowland) and a girl between age five and ten. I believe this girl was his daughter "Naona/Ona/Oney" (take your pick) since Elizabeth Salmons, the only other daughter close to Rowlands age, was not yet born. (Elisabeth would be born the following year, 1831). This suggests – to me at least - that there is a possibility that this Thomas Salmons is the father of "Oney." But I would like some other proof other than deduction. I also seem to recall seeing some sort of marriage certificate (?) for Naona Salmons and James Harlan Hicks (dated Oct. 1, 1840) on which is found the names of the witnesses - James' father, Reuben Hicks and Oney's father "Thomas Salmons," bug haven't been able to find that document in a recent search. Is there a Salmons family Bible, will, land transaction or some other sort of written record on which I might be able to find the name of Naona ("Oney") connected to Thomas Salmons and his wife Artemancia Frazier or any other Salmons branch? Could there possibly be a record that you know of that might prove a proximity of location between the Salmons and the Hicks families? Additionally - as I way of eliminated the source of a family myth - is there any rumor or trace of any Cherokee blood in the Frazier or Salmons line? I appreciate any help.
