Salling Family Genealogy Forum

I'm not related to J. P. Salling, but I have seen his notes. I'm needing to sort out this family as well as Richard Burton's family because I keep running into them in researching my ancestors. In fact, J. P. Salling's residence was a stop on a journey in 1745 undertaken by Col. John Buchanan who may be my husband's ancestor.
The last date I find that traces Richard & Ann Burton after Rockbridge (formerly Augusta) Co. VA is 1762 when they are in Cumberland Co., NC. Further searching in NC counties turns up Burtons in Orange & Guilford Counties, but also a Richard on a 1755 Orange Co. tax list. This has become too involved for me since I'm not even a descendant, but I suppose this could possibly be the same Richard of VA. Following the same patterns of logic (one person being on multiple tax lists), I wonder if I'm seeing the same George Adam Salling in Cumberland (1760 & 1764) & Orange Co. (1762 & 1768), NC. I also found a George Adam SALLY on a 1782 Rutherford Co., NC tax list.
My ancestors were in Rutherford Co., so when I saw that George Adam Sally (Salling) was possibly connected with Richard Burton & Augusta Co., VA, I decided to look further into this. I may have gotten in over my head, but it has lead me to discover some interesting history, such as the Regulator Movement in Orange Co., NC. There I found another name connected to my family: Capt. Benjamin Merrell.
Thanks for your reply.
